Dr. Paul R. Hernandez is an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology in the Learning Sciences and Human Development Department within the College of Education and Human Services (CEHS) at West Virginia University (WVU). In addition, Dr. Hernandez is a faculty affiliate in the Program Evaluation and Research Center (PERC) in CEHS at WVU. Dr. Hernandez earned a Ph.D. in Educational Measurement, Evaluation, and Assessment, with a specialization in Quantitative Methods, from the University of Connecticut.
His main program of research focuses on the regulation of motivation, social influences processes, and role such processes play in the academic persistence of underrepresented groups in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The consistent theme running through the above areas is his focus on the situational and person factors that maximize (or inhibit) human potential, particularly for members of underrepresented groups.
In general, he uses longitudinal, quasi-experimental, and experimental designed studies paired with advanced quantitative analytic methods to better understand the impact of motivational and social influence processes. For example, one of his current projects involves a longitudinal quasi-experimental designed study to understand the impact(s) of interventions aimed at improving the recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups in biomedical and STEM disciplines. By using structural equation and multilevel modeling techniques to quantify the direct, indirect, and moderated effects of the interventions on student performance and persistence in their chosen disciplines.
