The T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® WEST VIRGINIA (T.E.A.C.H. WV) scholarship project was developed to upgrade the level of education of teachers working with young children while making the educational process affordable, increasing wages and reducing turnover. The project was developed in North Carolina in 1990 by Child Care Services Association (which provides the T.E.A.C.H. license for West Virginia) and has spread to 22 states, including West Virginia. For FY 2008, nationally, T.E.A.C.H. provided 21,272 scholarships and increased compensation 5-10+% with the majority of state turnover rates under 5%.
T.E.A.C.H. WEST VIRGINIA assists teachers in returning to school to receive a higher education. T.E.A.C.H. WV pays a large portion of tuition and book costs, travel stipend each semester, partial reimbursement to the sponsoring program for paid release time and a bonus to the recipient.
The applicant must be a WV resident who is working at least 30 hours per week in a licensed child care program, Head Start, family child care facility, or family home provider. The applicant must also be enrolled in, or would like to be enrolled in, an Early Childhood Education program in pursuit of their associate degree, bachelor's degree, or Pre-K endorsement.
